那城 That City
<<back
The That City comic series is a collection of political cartoons by Hong Kong artist Justin Wong, originally published between 2020 and 2021 in the Sunday Lifestyle section of Ming Pao newspaper. Initially titled This City, the series used satire and illustration to comment on various current events in Hong Kong. However, following the implementation of the National Security Law on July 1, 2020, visual imagery was seen as riskier than text. In response, the column was renamed That City.
In 2021, after being reported, Justin Wong left Hong Kong abruptly and relocated to London. The series ultimately became a farewell to the city he once called home.
The book That City compiles 52 cartoons from the original run, addressing Hong Kong’s recent political climate, civic awareness, social atmosphere, and everyday life under the dual pressures of the National Security Law and the Covid-19 pandemic. It is a work of mourning, protest, warning, and warmth—dedicated to the people of Hong Kong.
